Updated over a week ago

Scope

This document provides instructions for replacing a SIM card and changing the APN on a Peplink device. APN changes are required when the SIM card is being swapped from one Data Provider to another. The most prominent use case is for Chemtreat who is adding a Telnyx SIM card to SIM slot B.

Prerequisites

  • Device powered on

  • Ethernet cable

  • For laptops without an Ethernet port – USB to Ethernet adapter

  • All antennas connected.

  • Small Phillips head screwdriver

Required Steps

Four (4) general steps are required to successfully change out a SIM card and change the APN.

  1. Direct access to modem

  2. Update APN

  3. Power Down for SIM card installation

    1. Replace new SIM card in SIM slot B.

  4. Power Up and validate Communication.

  5. Contact AquaPhoenix Modem Support to complete installation.

Step 1: Connect to modem

  1. Connect Laptop to the LAN port on modem with Ethernet cable.

    1. If laptop does not have an Ethernet port, a USB to Ethernet adapter is required.

  2. Open a web browser. Enter 192.168.50.1:8080 into the browser.

  3. Login into the Web UI using the following information:

    Username: admin

    Password: Ch3mtr34t

  4. From the menu, select Dashboard

Step 2: APN Update

  1. From the Dashboard > WAN Connection Status section, open the Cellular connection Status by clicking the Details button.

  2. The WAN Connection Status window will open.

  3. Scroll down to WAN Connection Settings. Then from Network Mode, ensure Auto is selected.

  4. Scroll down to Cellular Settings section.

  5. From within Cellular Settings, Check Both SIMs

    1. Note: This is done to give best chance for modem to come online after APN change

  6. For SIM Card B – set APN to data00.telnyx

  7. Scroll down to Signal Threshold Settings, ensure the Acceptable Level is moved to the far left.

  8. Click Save and Apply Button

Step 3: SIM Card Replacement

  1. Logout of the modem connection.

  2. Power off the modem.

  3. REPLACEMENT STEPS

    1. Remove the gateway from the enclosure to access the SIM card slots. To do this, remove the four screws as shown in the image below:

    2. Remove the SIM card cover. To remove the SIM card cover, loosen the single screw as seen in the image below:

    3. Once opened, you will see a SIM in slot A (leave this SIM alone) and no SIM in slot B.

    4. Insert the Telnyx SIM card into slot B via the following orientation:

Once the Telnyx SIM is inserted into slot B, you should see the following result:

    5. Finally, put the SIM card cover back on and reassemble the modem.

Step 4: Power Up and Validate Communications

  1. Prior to powering up the modem, power cycle the controller.

    1. Controller power cycle helps avoid potential corruption of data files due to modem changes.
  2. Power on the modem

    1. After about 4 minutes, modem will boot up. Connect back into the modem and validate changes have been saved.

  3. Document the IP Address displayed in the WAN Connection Settings of the modem. Click the Details button again and the IP address can be found in the WAN Connection Status section.

  4. Disconnect the ethernet cord from the modem.

  5. From a web browser, enter the IPaddress:8080 and confirm access to the modem via a remote connection.

    1. Example- 216.74.127.118:8080

Reconnection to a cellular signal after the APN change may take between 15-60 minutes dependent upon signal strength.
  6. If the modem login screen is visible, the APN has been successfully updated.
